it is interesting how these are starting to clump together seeking each other out. Safety in numbers. They are now reminding me of moss or fungus that grows on the bark of a tree, all liking into one another with no room for anything else to grow or invade the space they now claim theirs.
Oh My !!!!! this is beautiful work Susan. I have recently found a inspiring artist called Mari Hirata you can see her work at Schubert gallery and Metro 5 best work to see is Schubert she groups shoes (in her high heels)and things together in pattern. Love your work it has inspired me. Candyxx
In April and May I am an artist in residence at Ragdale at Lake Forest about three quarters of an hour north of Chicago. I planned to work on a new body of work exploring ideas of pattern and geometry.
The resulting works, posted here, are very much influenced by the colours of the spring gardens and the prairie landscape. As I had luggage limitations, I decided to work in watercolour, acrylic and ink while I was here. My workspace and display areas are also quite small so I have been challenged to produce work at a much smaller scale than usual.
Free Flight and the Pink Squadron
Working with pale pink Reflex copy paper I am constructing a pink squadron of origami 'stackers'. Stackers look like little fighter planes and when one throws a stack of them into the air they fly off freely and randomly in all directions.
I chose pink as it's the colour of the 'white skin' of the original immigrants who came to Australia.
I am trying to create an ideal model of immigration where access is free and unfettered and the immigrants land lightly on the terrain with intent of settlement rather than conquest.
Conversely I want to examine the stereotypes which arise when the environment is such that immigrants must group together to survive.
